QUESTION: What makes the sprinkler water (well water) in Kings Point smell like rotten eggs at times?

ANSWER:  When water (mainly well water) comes in contact with organic materials, or minerals such as pyrite, a chemical reaction produces hydrogen sulfide hence the smell of rotten eggs.

In 2013 the Lithia Water Plant addressed this problem with our tap water by installing a hydrogen sulfide removal treatment facility that removes the smelly chemical from well water (aquifers and ground water).

After treatment, the water, free of hydrogen sulfide, is then piped into homes in Sun City Center.
